Dr. Rix, born in Orillia, Ontario, in 1931 and raised in London, Ontario, earned his BA in 1953 and MD in 1957 from the University of Western Ontario. He began practicing general medicine in Vancouver in 1958 and later completed a pathology residency at VGH, earning his fellowship in 1972.
A visionary in British Columbia’s biotech industry, Dr. Rix expanded Metropolitan Biomedical Laboratories (later LifeLabs) into Western Canada’s largest independent medical laboratory, providing cutting-edge services. Recognized for his contributions, he received numerous accolades, including the BC Biotechnology Association's Lifetime Achievement Award (2004) and the BC Technology Industry Association's Bill Thompson Award for Lifetime Leadership (2005).
